Testimonial - Flyin Canoe Trip Wabakimi Park
Hello Clayton,
My wife and had a wonderful canoe adventure on the Allanwater River earlier this month. You’re skilled and personable pilot; Kendra dropped us off at Allanwater Bridge and picked us up promptly as agreed 5 days later at the mouth of the Allanwater where it empties into Wabikimi Lake. The lower Allanwater (the portion prior to Brennan Lake) offers a great
combination of Class 1 and 2 rapids (and likely higher with the high water) with portages available for those that we deemed too much to run, especially with our Kevlar canoe. The water levels were very high and as a result, care had to be taken when pulling out of the water at the foot of the portages. Also, the sheer volume of water made for some fast and
choppy waters even after the put-ins, sure speeds up the trip, though!
Brennan Lake is a very pleasant paddle. It’s dotted with lots of islands and bays and the 1.500000 topographic maps are important. We camped on our 3rd night on an island about 2-3kms above Brennan Falls We named the island
Blueberry Heaven as it was loaded with blueberries. Brennan Falls was quite spectacular with a good portage on River Right. Even so, the put in was tricky due to the sheer volume of fast water. The upper portion of the Allanwater has several rapids-some run-able and some not. The second to last set prior to entering Wabakimi Lake is a short portage on
River right. After the put in there were approximately 200 meters of fast water followed by a break of 200-300 meters. The topographic map had indicated one rapid but we quickly found the river narrowing and entering a chute with high cliffs on either side with no apparent portage. We made it through but the dozen or so standing waves (likely
4-5 feet) came close to sinking us. As I said-this doesn’t appear on the topographic map.
We finished the trip on our 4th day and enjoyed a beautiful layover day on one of the 3-4 islands at the mouth of the river where it enters Wabikimi Lake. Kendra arrived promptly the morning after and flew us back to your establishment.
A couple of notes-portages aren’t always immediately visible but I believe they were almost always on River right. As well they have had some recent maintenance to clear any blow down. Campsites were quite clean and uncluttered although we did bring out a few items that we found along the way. Hardly tried fishing but I’m sure the walleye were
plentiful below many of the numerous rapids along the way.
Thanks again for your help on our journey!
