Howling Wolves

Wolves howl. Howling is a method of communication. Howling is not just making sounds, but a method to increase the social bond with pack-mates. Wolves are social animals. To find food, the wolves run from place to place over a vast area. Often one gets separated from the rest. Howling calls, characterized by its low pitch and long time duration are ideal for communicating with long distant packmates.

We come across a myth that wolves howl sitting in the moonlight. In fact, wolves can howl standing in early morning, daytime, evening as well as at night.

Wolf howls are characterized by frequency modulations and sudden pitch changes. When a wolf gets separated from the pack, howling makes it easier to find the mates. On the other hand, if there are wolves of other packs or opponents, howling can cost the life of the lone howling wolf. Howling in chorus solves this problem. When several wolves howl at a time, the mixing of sounds and the echoes makes it difficult for the opponent packs to identify the location and strength of the howling pack. Howling is also related to the size of the pack. Bigger the size of the pack, greater is the inclination to howl. A chorus howl generally starts with an individual howl pointing the head towards the sky and the other members soon joins in. A chorus howling can be heard from a distance of 15 km in ideal conditions. After a howling session, a pack usually maintains a 20 minutes silence which allows the pack to listen to any reply of howling by other packs. Wolves also howl in grief at the death of their packmate.

Apart from being killed by poachers, wolves die mostly by wolves of opponent packs. The individual howling patterns of wolves makes it possible by other packmates to identify the lone one. Similarly, hearing an unknown howling pattern, help the wolves to identify an intruder. For this reason wolves are always cautious about the time, place and the situation to howl for. However, wolf pups can’t recognize the howlings, and generally howl in reply to all the howlings they hear. They howl for fun. Wolves generally do not howl too often during May-June as then packs are likely to have very young pups. When pups begin to travel with their pack, the risk of howling gets increased. The dominant maleor the alpha-male in a pack is most aggressive in howling and howls often even though there may be a chance of confrontation.
